A unique creation of Irish Blues.

Sounding Cov

There is a lot to say about Sounding Cov. I have spoken at conferences and written articles about it. I will be sharing more on my blog in due course.

Here is an abstract I wrote for an academic conference:

Sounding Cov was a musical pilgrimage which took place in Coventry over four consecutive years between 2010-2013.

The method of expression was Sanskrit mantra, vocalised continuously for 11 hours throughout the night of November 14th from 7pm until 6am, interacting with jazz improvisation.

Sounding Cov was inititiated by a desire to activate an alternative vibration in the city of Coventry on a key historic date. The first performance took place in 2010 on the 70th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s 11 hour bombing of the city.

Sanskrit mantra is a powerful vibration which acts as an initiation into the Mysteries of geographic location. Mantras are sacred words of power. Each year, audience and performers met in an act of creative collaboration with the urban landscape.

The discipline of repetition, which defines the form of mantra, allowed for a unique experience of time, as though past events could be experienced and heard in the present. In exchange for the concentration and consistency required by people to keep repeating mantra, a route of travel was offered as a reward.

Traditional pilgrimage involves people travelling by foot to move through land. In the pilgrimage of Sounding Cov, travelling was done by voice which allowed the land to move through people.

Chanting Sanskrit mantra for an extended period of time, on a key historic night, at a specific place, acted like a pneumatic drill. The concrete of perception could be penetrated to allow a softening to the subtlety of whatever the city chose to reveal about itself.

The longitudinal perspective offered by four years of this experiential practice as research, provides observations, comments and queries on place, human agency and the sacred.
